WHO IS GREATEST?
For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one
who serves? Is it not the one at the table? But I am among you
as one who serves.
Jesus reminds the disciples
of his mission ... to serve them, to serve others, and thereby
to serve his Father in heaven. This was to be the disciples'
mission, and it is to be ours as well. We are to serve.
But how? Webster lists over 20 different definitions of "serve."
We don't need a dictionary to define for us how to serve; we
only need to look at what Jesus did and what he teaches us in
the scriptures.
One way in which Sally and I choose to serve is at our monthly
community breakfast at St. Paul's. Our guests are mostly the
homeless and less fortunate individuals of our society. We don't
know why they are homeless and, frankly, it does not matter, but
as long as they come and are hungry, we will serve them. It is
very humbling to put yourself in the role of servant, but it is
so, so gratifying to know that you are doing exactly what the
Lord has done and what he asks each and every one of us to do.
Follow his lead, be one who serves, let your light shine to the
glory of our Father in heaven.
Father, we thank you for
being our example as One who serves and ask that you would
continue to guide and direct us so that we might, too, might
become better servants today, tomorrow and every day throughout
our lives. Amen.
