1 Samuel 3:1-18

HERE I AM, LORD

Now the Lord came and stood there calling as before, "Samuel, Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening.”

As I read this text, I am amazed at Samuel's response to God's call and his willingness to serve. Samuel heard God each time he called. He jumped out of bed and ran to serve his Lord. I wish my response to God's call was with such attentiveness and willingness to serve.

When I was called by God to serve as president of the congregation last year, I didn't hear him initially. There were others who heard his call to me, but I really thought they had gotten the message confused and were talking to the wrong person. I don't mind serving God - in fact, I really enjoy it - but I thought I was better suited to serve in the kitchen washing or drying dishes, or teaching Sunday school or helping in the church office. I prayed about this particular call that God was asking me to serve. I listened to hear what he had to say, and I trusted that he knows what is best for me. I have to say that this call to serve has been amazing. The experience is one I will not forget, and I can't wait to hear where God is calling me to serve next.

We are God's people, and we are here to do God's work. We are changed by God's love, sent out in God's love, to serve others with God's love.

Heavenly Father, help us to hear your call and to answer with a resounding, "Here I am, Lord, send me." Amen.
