LOVE ONE ANOTHER
“I
give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I
have loved you, you should also love one another.”
Jesus gave this new
commandment to his disciples shortly before his crucifixion. On
the surface it seems simple enough and should not be hard to
follow. So why is this commandment violated so often by people
who claim to be followers of Jesus? How can this commandment be
put into practice? Here is one way.
A member of our congregation lost his wife in the past year.
They had been married for more than 55 years and had children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They were a devoted
couple and did everything together. The husband was devastated,
even though her death was not unexpected. There had been falls
and fractures, followed by hospitalizations, but in the end her
heart simply gave out.
The husband was totally unprepared for the outpouring of love
from others in the congregation. There were the words of
encouragement, the cards and, most important of all, the
prayers.
I, Leslie Riggle, am that member. And now, in keeping with this
new commandment, I resolve to offer support to other members who
are in need.
Heavenly Father, I thank
you for all the good years of our marriage and now ask that you
give me the wisdom to see opportunities to obey this new
commandment given to us by your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.
