GOOD FRIDAY, April 2

Isaiah 53

ALL OUR GUILT

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Can any of us really say that we haven't gone astray? Haven't all Christians given in to their own march toward sin and evil? Of course we have. Could we collectively bear the burden that Christ bore for us on the cross this day? Of course we couldn't. Had Christ not been God as well as man, he surely could not have endured the burden of our sins on the cross.

So today we share Good Friday. A solemn and contemplative service this evening is the norm. This day often sparks debate among scholars as to the meaning of "Good" in Good Friday, but that is not the point here. This is: " 'Do this in remembrance of me.' ... For whenever you eat this bread, and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes again (1 Corinthians 11:24-26)."

All of us believers are forever changed by Jesus' sacrifice. We are reminded through those words from 1 Corinthians every Sunday, every single observance of the Lord's Supper. We are changed forever into forgiven followers. We are reminded that not even death can overcome God's love and grace for his children. We are reminded of Christ's sacrifice and his being made alive in the Holy Spirit.

That seems like a lot of reminding, but we really are like sheep! We need to be reminded, coaxed and led down the paths God chooses for us, not the paths that will lead us astray.

Dearest Father, we ask humbly for reminders and encouragement to not go astray. We thank you for your love for us and for the sacrifice you have made to save us, your undeserving children. Amen.
