Some have entertained angels without knowing it.

WHO ARE THE ANGELS?

I have often wondered how an angel looks. Do they have wings? Are they dressed in white? Do they have a halo and a harp? By wondering about the storybook and artistic portrayal of angels, I believe I have missed the reality of angels.

In my experience, unproven but believed by me, angels take many forms:

– A good friend who comes to see me when I really need a friend.

– A bird that lands on the deck and stays and sings when I need joy.

– A kitty that comes to bed with me in the middle of the night and places her paws on my back when I have had a bad dream.

– A friend who posts a joke when I need a smile.

Never have I seen an angel as portrayed in art or books. However I have experienced angels. The angel answers my unnamed need with their presence and kindness. I do not think that the angel is aware that I consider them an angel. But here they are at a painful or doubtful time for me. And somehow they know what to say or do.

Recently I have been struggling with hate and violence in the world. I could list the numerous events that have taken place just since the beginning of 2026. My list may not be your list but we have experienced an ongoing sense of separation, judgment and anger. I am left feeling hopeless, wondering if anything can be done or said to address the pain of this world.

God hears me — and you. God speaks to us through his word and the words and actions of others. God moves my friend to simply stop by and her presence lifts me. God sends that precious songbird to my deck and causes me to pause at the wonder of his creation. God moves my Abby Cat to sense my fear and she comforts me the way she likes to be comforted. God endows my friend with humor that she shares with me to lift my spirits. God hears my silent groan, fear, loneliness and despair.

May God continue to send angels to each of us in this time. May the angels be the answer we are seeking.

Good and gracious God, thank you for your Word, for your presence and for your wisdom that comforts us and gives us hope so that we may be part of bringing kindness and joy back to your world. Amen
